Hurricane season and your roof
Hurricane season in Florida runs from June 1 to November 30. The roof takes the worst of the wind and rain, so a little preparation goes a long way.
Before the season
- Have the roof checked before the season starts, especially if it is older
- Replace missing or loose shingles and cracked tiles
- Clear gutters and downspouts so heavy rain can drain
- Trim branches that hang over the roof
- Take dated photos of your roof in good condition, for your records

After a storm
- Stay off the roof and away from fallen power lines
- Look from the ground for missing shingles, tiles or flashing
- Check ceilings and the attic for new stains or dripping
- Photograph any damage before temporary repairs, and keep receipts
- Contact your insurance company promptly if you plan to claim
Good to know in Florida
Building code
In Miami-Dade and Broward counties, the Florida Building Code's High-Velocity Hurricane Zone rules apply, with stricter requirements for roofing products and installation.
Wind mitigation
Many Florida insurers give discounts for wind-resistant roof features. Ask your insurer about a wind mitigation inspection.
Repair or replace after damage
Florida rules on when a damaged roof must be fully replaced changed in 2022. Roofs built to the 2007 Florida Building Code or later can usually be repaired rather than replaced. Ask about your own roof.
Deductibles
Florida law does not allow a contractor to offer to pay or waive your insurance deductible.
